A stranded juvenile Risso's dolphin was saved by a rescue team from the Dyer Island Conservation Trust from the rocks at Franskraal, Gansbaai at the weekend. The 2 metre dolphin had a number of superficial injuries (probably as a result of the stranding) and was heavily infested with parasites when it was found by local residents. The cause of the stranding was unclear.
Welcome to Ann (UK) who is spendig 4 weeks at our community NGO that works with those infected and affected by HIV / AIDS. Ann has a Human Resource background and will be working on employee development.
A big thank you to friends and qualified teachers Rachael and Bridget from the UK who passed on invaluable skills and knowledge to both Sibongile and Thuli at the pre-school. Your influence has already been seen!
Our volunteer from Hong Kong said that it would be interesting studying and learning about sharks as they are used to eating them as a delicacy with a special meal!!
John (Sweden) has not only built a much needed pit latrine, but was able to build 3 load-carry bicycle trailers.
These will be sold by the community project so that people can use them to start small businesses.
He also was innovative in the design by building a trailer that fits onto the side of the bicycle - like a side car. This is more cost effective as it only need one wheel!
John from Sweden has added to the work of previous volunteer Kevin (USA) by improving the facilities for Moshe the indigent owner of the sandbag house.
John dug a pit latrine, made hand-made bricks from scratch, built the latrine, laid a cement floor, and put a rain gutter onto the roof to protect the walls.

Well the World cup has come and gone with much fanfare and accolades. South Africa staged a world class event! Many people and countries were so negative about the ability of SA to host the World Cup - they had to eat humble pie in the end.
So what does all this hype mean for tourism in South Africa. There will be many ambassadors returning to their home countries singing the praise of SA as a host country.
Many have said that they intend returning.... hopefully to see another side of our rainbow country ... not just the soccer side ... but perhaps giving a gift of time and skill by volunteering in a community or conservation project and getting behind the scene of the country thereby leaving another legacy after the World Cup!
