Pretoria - South Africa

sSportsGoalieViewThe Voluntours Play Longer Sports Challenge is a sport development initiative aimed at keeping ButtonApplyNowyouth, boys and girls, off the streets by providing them with a positive outlet facilitated and mentored by volunteers.

The theme of Play Longer has been linked to HIV/AIDS education and is an integral part of all tournaments – play longer and live longer. This project is set in semi-rural South Africa and gives you as the volunteer a unique sense of community.

Most rural and township communities in South Africa lack adequate sport facilities and the access to sporting equipment and coaching. This initiative is geared toward providing youth with access to these often neglected areas. Through this initiative youth are able to learn and develop skills associated with sports such as the value of team work, socialisation, reliability and self esteem.

The youth are encouraged by the volunteers to take ownership of their sporting code thereby building management and responsibility. Teams have each elected a representative to sit on the co-ordinating committee to run and manage the tournament themselves  Not only are the players mobilised to play sport but the community is educated in the sport thereby encouraging wider community buy-in and growing a spectator culture.

The programme encourages the development and access to a variety of sporting codes. Often giving youth and communities exposure to otherwise “unavailable” sports.

Successes so far have been a Play Longer Soccer Challenge which was made possible by Pieter van der Niet of Houthoff Training and Coaching, Netherlands, who visited Mapoch Ndebele Village. Pieter enthusiastically managed to raise second-hand soccer kit from friends and football teams in Holland. FC Zetterberg and CDN Driebergen have kindly donated most of the soccer kit. Shipment and freighting costs from Holland have kindly been sponsored by Houthoff and Hellman Worldwide Logistics. The 2008 tournament was contested by a total of 12 local teams with the South Africa Police Service FC team winning the cup!

We are looking for volunteers with a love and passion for all types of sports to help run and / or set up a new sporting codes in our rural community and Soweto based volunteer projects

The “Project Contribution” included in your overall fee will contribute to the long-term sustainability of the project during your actual volunteer stay on the ground. On your return home you may continue to support the project financially with donations via TravelPledge, a UK-based charity, or via our separate Donations Account. Please enquire with our office for further information.
